what the hell is this about?

Several friends have embarked on their own P365 journey but as I have no camera nor an eye for photography I've decided to try to complete "a doodle a day" for an entire year. Most will be in my little Derwent A5 sketch book but some could end up being from the corner of some document or scribbled on a newspaper. As the year progresses I will try my hand at inking them as well?

If some of them don't make sense, don't worry, they're probably not meant to. You may notice there will be certain themes along the way and if you know me you'll know why.

I hope you enjoy.

Okay, here goes, every day til I'm 39.

Day #151 - the Groovie Ghoulies

Earlier today I was reading about Alex Toth (there was a recommended reading link off an Amazon page I was on and the a recommended link off that page to a book about Alex Toth), it instantly made me think of his work, you see Alex Toth worked for Hanna Barberra for about 20 years and once we entered the dark ages of the mid 80s when cartoons lost their innocence and they suddenly needed to have morals and horrible commercialisation within then Alex lost the passion and walked away from the game.

Alex was a true pioneer, in US comic/cartoon history there are only a few iconic people, Stan Lee, Wil Eisner, Tex Avery and Alex Toth.

Toth created the following characters;
Birdman
Green Arrow
the Herculoids
the Super Friends
Spaceghost

apart from these he drew almost all of the character sheets for HB cartoons.

What he is best remembered for though is Dell comics.

How does this link to today's drawing?

I'm not sure but whilst reading some really interesting articles there was a small thumbnail with Wolfie on it. I'd forgotten all about the Groovie Ghoulies, it was an excellent cartoon but obviously this must have been made when LSD was prevalent as it was an extremely colourful cartoon.

From memory it was more a musical cartoon and it also had weird intermission segments.

I think I'm going to go and find some youtube instances.

  1. Love to see Alex Toth recalled, Glenn. Then looking at your gun (more recent picture) makes me think of Toth's war comics for EC in the 50s - he was great with weaponry. asher
