what the hell is this about?

Several friends have embarked on their own P365 journey but as I have no camera nor an eye for photography I've decided to try to complete "a doodle a day" for an entire year. Most will be in my little Derwent A5 sketch book but some could end up being from the corner of some document or scribbled on a newspaper. As the year progresses I will try my hand at inking them as well?

If some of them don't make sense, don't worry, they're probably not meant to. You may notice there will be certain themes along the way and if you know me you'll know why.

I hope you enjoy.

Okay, here goes, every day til I'm 39.

Day #190 - Awesome begins with the letter E

on the 30th November 2007 the greatest Daredevil that ever lived passed away.

I remember when I was a boy that every boy wanted to be Evel Knievel and every mother feared that they might try.

the ironic thing is that he didn't die being a Daredevil yet instead lived to a healthy 69 years old before finally succumbing to his health failed due to diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

one of his last quotes was this;

"No king or prince has lived a better life. You're looking at a guy who's really done it all. And there are things I wish I had
done better, not only for me but for the ones I loved,"

Pretty much sums it up eh?

Day #189 -R.I.P. Enrico Pallazzo

Today one of the all time greats passed.

some of the greatest cinematic lines have emerged from his voicebox, probably the most famous would be "I am being serious! and stop calling me Shirley"

I know Dad's most memorable (and I bet he's chuckling whilst reading this) was in Naked Gun and it was simply, "hey you've got something in the corner of your mouth"

He also got to tell Priscilla Presley that she had a "nice beaver"

I really wanted to do this one properly but we had a really tough game of basketball tonight and I am completely buggered so I got this one finished in under 20 minutes (17 to be precise) I know it doesn't look like him but as they say, it's the thought that counts.

Day #188 - Halo Halo

okay, must admit that not many people will get this one, those that do will understand the play on words and I hope that they think this to be funny?

For Dad, this is what this drawing means;

Halo-halo (from Tagalog word halò, "mix") is a popular Filipino dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice and evaporated milk to which are added various boiled sweet beans and fruits, and served in a tall glass or bowl.

Ingredients include boiled kidney beans, garbanzos, sugar palm fruit (kaong), coconut sport (macapuno), and plantains caramelized in sugar, jackfruit (langkâ), gulaman, tapioca or sago, nata de coco, sweet potato (kamote), pounded crushed young rice (pinipig). In terms of arrangement, most of the ingredients (fruits, beans, and other sweets) are first placed inside the tall glass, followed by the shaved ice. This is then sprinkled with sugar, and topped with either (or a combination of) leche flan, ube halaya, or ice cream. Evaporated milk is poured into the mixture upon serving.

And Halo is a videogame (the most popular) for the Microsoft Xbox platform;

Halo is a science fiction video game franchise created by Bungie and owned and published by Microsoft Game Studios. The main trilogy of games center on the experiences of the Master Chief, a cybernetically-enhanced human super-soldier, and his artificial intelligence(AI) companion, Cortana. The Master Chief aids future humanity in battling the Covenant, a theocratic alliance of alien races that worship an ancient civilization known as the Forerunners, and a parasitic organism known as the Flood. In this science fiction setting, the term "Halo" refers to Halo megastructures: large, habitable ringed structures, similar to the Orbitals in Iain M Banks' Culture novels, or to smaller versions of Larry Niven's Ringworld

So you see the main character "Master Chief" is whom I've drawn here twice, so the play is that it is 2 instances of the videogame, hence Halo Halo yet a lot of my friends will think I've drawn their favourite dessert.

Okay Dad? get it?

yeah I know, it's not that funny but it was sort of fun trying to draw the exact same picture mirrored, and by fun I mean shit hard!

Day #187 - Crabs?

Hawk has been playing Lego Indiana Jones lately and when I was playing with him he was telling me how my character was afraid of the crabs, I thought, crabs? when I saw them I realised that they were scorpions.

I couldn't figure out where he got that idea from, until tonight.

I had roughed this drawing before going out and Vic looked at it and said 'why are you drawing a crab?'

Either this really does look like a crab or it's a Filo thing?

Day #186 - Random scratchings

I just felt like random doodling tonight, so going from last night's drawing I drew a futuristic car type of thing then got bored drawing that so drew the military robot type of thing then decided on the little pistol in the corner.

just one of those days were I couldn't really be bothered. sorry.

Day #185 - getting schooled again!

today Hawk asked me if I can draw cars, I told him not really but I'd give it a shot.

He said, I want you to draw a futuristic classic car that's speedy but looks good.

I said, okay but I think you need to draw me what you mean and I'll copy it.

so he drew this, truck/duck with a canon on the front and a spoiler for downforce and a mid engine to counterbalance the weight of the canon.

I blew me away that he just drew this in about 20 seconds, obviously not the quality of the drawing but the thought that he put into where things belong.

I tried to copy it for him but I think I've done him a massive injustice, maybe he'll do me another one tomorrow so I can try again?

Day #184 - Bonnet is coming!

it's hard when one of your best mates lives on the other side of the world but it makes the times when you are together all the more special.

It's been a long while since I've seen my little buddy actually think I only had a son last time I saw her.

She flies out tomorrow so I should see her by the weekend, I can't wait!

Years ago I created a crime fighter in her honour, Bonnet is the name of that character and she has special powers (what they are isn't that clear) but she usually gets what she wants and can persuade anybody to her way of thinking.

Day #183 - over the hump

a few things achieved today

PC fixed- check!

Doodle posts up to date - check!

Passed half way - check!

182 to go!

Hawk asked me to draw him Darth Vader and 8 Stormtroopers when I tucked him in to bed tonight, I said "no way, you know how long that would take?" he said "okay, Darth Vader and 2 Stormtroopers" to which I replied, "nup, still too many", he said "it's okay you can draw the Lego ones"

little bugger! I love him but I don't think he realises Daddy needs to rest at night too?

anyway, got this kooky idea, I think it'd look cool on a t-shirt.

I actually had fun doing this and found some funny videos on Youtube along the way.

Day #182 - MERMEN!!!

was able to finally get back to playing basketball tonight after missing 5 games through illness or absenteeism.

It was a really tough game but we played an awesome job of clock management at the end and managed to hold on to a 2 point lead and the win, this is now the 3rd win in a row and gives a 3-3 record for the season.

the Mermaids have become the Mermen!

Of course I had to draw Mer-man from He-Man.

Got my PC fixed tonight but it's too late to scan the pics in, will do it tomorrow instead.

Day #181 - home safe and sound

Mix woke up well this morning, thank god/allah/buddha/dianetics/Albert Einstein. it was a bit of a mad rush to get out before 10am but we managed, We set off in the car and by the time we'd left Port Stephens I was the only one left awake, the stereo was mine! Vic woke up around Hornsby, Mix woke up around Pennant Hills and Hawk woke at the Sunnyholt rd exit on the M7, man they had a great trip, I was a little sore as I was sardined into my seat.

this odd little drawing popped into my head at around 11pm tonight, I don't know what it is and maybe it's best that way.

Whatever you think it is is probably right?

went to scan in only to find my PC has died whilst we were away, will have to buy a new PSU for it tomorrow, too tired to troubleshoot it tonight, will leave it to tomorrow instead.

Day #180 - Lego panic

Today Mix is recovering slowly but sleeping a hell of a lot, poor little thing, toughest little 2 year old Kieran or I have ever seen.

Kieran got stuck playing 'Go Fish' with Hawk and Izzy, there were some cool hands getting played, which the youngsters were dominating.

Once they got sick of that they moved on to Lego

Then to the shopping game.

Then they went on an 'adventure walk' at the beach

Then we had dinner, Mix ate some mashed potato and managed to keep it down for about 30mins and only about half of it came back out.

Hawk went to bed and left me with instructions on what to draw, it was an entire scene from Empire Strikes Back, this is what I drew him, a snowtrooper on a 'snow-bike' and a snowspeeder pilot nervously facing off against him, no guesses at to whom would have won.

we head back home tomorrow, hopefully Mix will be back to normal.

Day #179 - the worst round ever

Poor little Mika got sick last night, vomitting constantly but she is such a strong little girl she hardly complained at all. Vic and I didn't get much sleep at all but it really didn't matter considering we were in paradise, even if it was covered in vomit.

The Ashes arrived this morning and Kieran and I headed out to play a round of golf at Nelson Bay Golf course, it was a beautiful course but severely overcrowded, we only got through 13 holes in 4.5hrs before we had enough and pulled the pin.

The highlights of the day was the kangaroos, I topped a ball on about the 5th or 6th hole and hit a roo in the tail, it didn't seem to phase him and my ball dribbled down the fairway, a couple of holes later Kieran got one right in the middle of the head! he just sat there, shook his head about 10 times then went back about his business, so very Australian that they were so blasé about it and remained so chilled.

This is all I could think about, if the roles were reversed we'd be laying there dying whilst the Roo's just played on in their ultra-chilled manner.

Day #178 - Boots

the weather was a little overcast today but it was warm enough to take the kids to the beach, Mika loved it, she's a real water baby and being the first time ever on a beach she absolutely had a ball.

We went out for Thai down in Nelson Bay tonight so by the time we got home I was too exhausted so I drew Boots to go with Dora from last night.
I hope Mika likes these, I bet I know what she'll ask for for Xmas as well.

A puppy, just like Dora's.

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Day #177 - Dora

I said that I'd never draw Dora, after watching about 3 million hours of Dora and being able to speak about 4 Spanish words I've decided that the show doesn't work and it's annoying.

But after a big drive and a big day this is the quickest and easiest thing that I can draw, it's for Mika, so when she wakes up tomorrow at this beautiful place she'll have something else to make her happy.

Day #176 - really not well

today was my second day on leave and I am the sickest I have been yet, I was able to deliver my sample for testing and begin the antibiotics, 1000mg per day should get me set but it is making me feel like total shit.

We are off to Fingal Bay for the first family holiday we've had in 3 years so I really hope that I get better before morning.

these are the things that were worrying me today, the weather, my medicine, my hugely gas filled intestine and an old decrepit lion's head?

Monday, November 15, 2010

Day #175 - spin the wheel

Went to the doctor today and they again spun the wheel, this time they think that I caught a bug from the last antibiotics that I was on?

So what are they doing to treat it?

No Dairy
No Meat

just eat dry bread and soup.

Oh and take these new antibiotics, they're a bit stronger and should combat it nicely (maybe).

Oh and lastly, before you begin these antibiotics, catch some of your crap in this cup and bring it back to us.

At least they are wanting to do some more investigation.

Maybe next they'll put me on steroids?

I'd better check what's on the banned substances list for my basketball comp, man am I missing that, 4 games missed through illness now.

Hopefully I'll be able to play twice next week.

Day #174 - Pound for pound!

8 World titles

Manny is truly one of the greats.

I would have drawn a portrait but I've been bed ridden all day and have been really sick again so I just did this quick one.

Off to the doctor again tomorrow, fingers crossed they'll be able to finally figure out what's wrong with me?

Day #173 - Donut Fire!

All day today I was going to draw Ninja Ninja from Afro Samurai, that is until about 5pm when Jho put on Street Fighter IV on the PS3 for Hawk to play.

Hawk was a natural and got to the 5th round on his first go!

I'm crap at fighting games and couldn't get past round 1 for my first 3 games.

Then I got onto Dhalsim, got me to round 5 before I got hammered by Sagat.

I remember when we used to play Street Fighter on SNES at number 4 Ballendella an Lester's favourite character was Dhalsim, he was slower than all the rest but had amazing reach and an awesome headbutt. His "Donut Fire!" fireball move although very hard to dish out had the coolest reaction of any signature move in the game turning the opponent into a human fireball.

This one is memory of the Littleman's only gaming that I remember, maybe once you go Dhalsim nothing else compares?

Day #172 - the 3 most influential religious hats

I don't know how well I've drawn these so, from left to right they are supposed to be;

the Burka, the Pope's hat and the "foam dome"

this is my dig at Redneck ignorance.

what is it with religious hats? I've always found it interesting that not just with religion but with a lot of things we associate the importance of things with hats.

the ultimate for an Australian cricketer is to receive their cap.

Judges wear those funny wigs (wigs are hats)

Jews wear that little cap or those big black hats with the spiral curls (maybe that's hair?)

Sikhs have their turbans

Policemen wear their hats, actually I believe that they must be wearing their hat to issue you with a fine.

Catholic priests wear those little black numbers.

Muslims have the burka and that round flat-topped hat (my favourite religious hat)

I dunno where I was going with this, I'm tired and I going to go to bed.

All I know is I love hats!

Day #171 - Remembrance

My Great Grandfather was a Lighthorseman at the battle of the Somme.
Although he survived WWI the mustard gas that he was exposed to shortened his life considerably.

I never met the man and all I have is a photo of him standing in front of a factory on his horse about 10 minutes before the building was bombed by the Germans.

He and his son (whom was a sapper in New Guinea in WWII) didn't ask for us to thank them, insisting instead that it was just what you did at that time.

I know that that today would have been a very special day indeed for him and I could only imagine how he would have felt losing so many of his friends.

It seems like a minute isn't enough, but they wouldn't expect more, after all they were just doing what you did.

Day #170 - Rorschach

Lately I've been reading Watchmen, it's truly an amazing piece of work, actually I have been reading Watching the Watchmen which is the story about how the book came about.

I never even knew about it until I saw the movie, which unlike most people I absolutely loved.

It's like 'the man in the high castle' without the stupid "it was all a dream" ending.

I love the characters and I thought the adaptation was very true to the original work.

Of all the characters though I love Rorschach the best, the Comedian was a close second but he really was evil.

Rorschach just seemed the only guy that wouldn't give in, still out fighting for justice and his ink blot mask was amazing.

that voice is so memorable too.

Anyway, I thought I'd give Rorschach a go, it turned out good enough I think.

Finally starting to feel like I might be getting back to myself, hopefully I'll be back to 100% by the weekend.

damn I hate this capped internet! (this took 30mins to upload!)

Day #169 - the PBA

it's amazing the increase in numbers in the Pro Bum arena in the city, it seems that every corner has one and any corner that doesn't has people selling the Big Issue.

Don't get  me wrong, the Big Issue guys are great because they are legitimate.

But these other ones really annoy me, they seem to sit right on the corner and right in the middle of the footpath so that you have to go around them and be careful not to kick their cardboard signs/boxes etc.

I was joking today when I went to lunch that I think what we need to regulate them and what came into my head was this symbol, I ripped off the idea from the iconic Jerry West NBA logo which is superb.

I don't hate homeless people I just hate liars and cheats and I feel that a large proportion of these beggars are merely just scamming people and what is worst it's making the genuine people get less or nothing at all.

I saw the Pro Bum today outside work playing with his iPhone whilst he sat there.

on a lighter note, it's now day 8 of my illness and I'm still producing so much gas that I fear George Bush will invade my house and run a pipeline out of my ass for Haliburton!

lastly, internet caps suck! FU OPTUS!

Day #168 - by request

when putting my little man to bed tonight (not a euphemism) I asked him if he would like me to draw something for him, he asked me if I could draw Batman. (he's hooked on Lego Batman lately, going old skool on the PS2*)

I said no.

he asked why, so I told him.

Batman sucks. he ain't super he's just a rich boy with toys and no clue about how to dress (undies go on the inside).

So he asked if I could draw some baddies, of course I said YES!

I asked him what he wanted and he told me, I want the Joker and the pussy cat one and Mr Freeze, all together talking about how they want to kill Batman.

so this is what he gets.

doodled in his little A5 pad, should be a nice surprise for him when he wakes up.

*the PS2 is easily the best console ever made and at the same time easily the worst DVD player of all time.

Day #167 - Hawkman

When playing Diablo II yesterday Hawk insisted on starting again as a Necromancer (we were playing as a Barbarian) as he wanted to play with "sackeruns" (what he calls skeletons).

So we had to create a new character and when I asked him what name he wanted to call his man he just froze up so I went ahead and typed "Hawkman", of course he could read the first bit but couldn't figure out what the last bit meant for a few minutes, when he finally figured it out he said to me "cool" so I save it and started the game, then Hawk suddenly said to me "but Dad, he hasn't got wings! he can't be Hawkman", I told him I couldn't change it and he was okay with that and went on to play it for the next 3 or 4 hours.

I said to him, I'll draw you a picture of Hawkman, half knowing what Hawkman looked like (like Stratos from He-Man).

Anyway this picture has a lot of things I'm not happy with but a 5 year shouldn't notice I hope.

Day #166 - Demon

Today I was browsing through CGHub and came across this awesome picture/model some dude had done of Batman, he said in his description that he did the whole thing in Sculptris.

I'd never heard of Sculptris so I went looking for it.

It's the coolest little app I've seen in a long long time. It's only 3mb in size, it's free and runs directly from an extracted folder.

It doesn't miss a beat either.

So, I have been playing with it for as long as that awful Miami Vice has been playing (about an hour and a half so far) and after fumbling around with the tools for a little bit I was able to model out this little demon looking guy.

It looks a lot like a melted candle but for a 3d model this is pretty good for me, I could easily see me losing many many hours on the train to the little baby, what a great app.

I guess I settled on this demon because I've been playing Diablo II with Hawk all day and I watched Hellboy with Mika (not exactly desired viewing for a 2 year old I know)

I think I'll definitely be doing some more in this app but I'm going to draw tomorrow night as I'll be pining for the missed Nitin Sawhney gig, I hope Littleman and Ed have a great time, wish I could be there with you guys!

Day #165 - Asterix or Asterisk?

I thought of this one quite some time ago and today it just fell out.

Imagine if you press SHIFT +8 and got a little picture of Asterix instead? that would be so cool.

Go looking for the special conditions of an offer and find the Asterix that explains the loopholes.

I'm really happy with how he turned out, I don't really know Asterix, never got into it, it was more my brother's taste, too much writing for me. I did like Obelisk though, I thought he was pretty cool.

Sorry I had to do the CIA style black outs, this has my meeting notes on it from a meeting I attended today so I thought I'd best black people's names and numbers etc.

Oh it also has the repair bill for my car, gonna take a lot more care of it now, just cost me $1300 to renew rego (inclusive of repairs) which is a lot considering I only paid $1500 for it originally! At least it'll be a nice safe car to drive around now, bit of peace of mind as I take Hawk to school in it.

I'm at the tail end of my illness now, feel much better today, no gas, no bloating, just dehydrated and tired.

I think this would have to be one of the earliest doodles I've gotten posted, 100% freebie, Citrix iForum pad and VMWare forum biro! LOL!

Day #164 - the Hatter

today was one really big challenge, I am the sickest I have been in about 18 months and have been phasing in and out of consciousness all day.

When the kids came home Hawk asked me to put on a movie, so we settled on Alice in Wonderland (the Tim Burton one) and we only got to watch about half before Hawk begged me to turn it off because he was too scared of Helena Bonham Carter. After the kids were in bed I finished the movie off, it was (IMHO) brilliant, HBC was brilliant as the queen and Depp was at his best as the Hatter, it must be 30 years since seeing the animated Disney classic but I think that this one didn't disappoint as so many remakes do.

Anyway, as I said I was really quite exhausted and just did this quick drawing in about 20 minutes whilst watching the end of the movie.

Wednesday, November 3, 2010

Day #163 - the Dark side

I've loved Stars Wars since I saw the first movie when I was five and am so happy that Hawk loves them too, I never showed him the movies but actually think it was Nan (my mum) that introduced them to him. I think I may have blogged this before but Star Wars was the first VHS tape we ever owned, and Mum still has that tape and that's the tape that Hawk first saw it from.

What is most amazing for me is that we both have the same favourite character, Boba Fett and we both tend to think that the evil empire have way better or cooler characters.
Think about it,
Boba Fett (and Jango Fett)
Darth Vader
Darth Maul
the Emperor
Bossk
IG88
Dengar (well, my love for him comes from Robot Chicken)
Stormtroopers
Snowtroopers (they still scare me)
Biker Scouts
the Tie Pilots (the black Stormtroopers)

and who have the rebels got?
Chewbacca
Yoda
Tauntauns

but for some reason we still cheered for the good guys?

Add to the list of cool characters, this guy, Count Dooku, played by Christopher Lee in the movies but by far the coolest looking character in the Clone Wars animated shows.

Hawk doesn't like him but I bet he'll like this picture!

Day #162 - the Stomach bug

About 3 years ago Dad and I got a 'nice' little present for Xmas, a nasty stomach  bug that distends your stomach full of an awful rancid egg-gas reflux and throws into the mix a nice big batch of diarrhea  to boot.

It lasts for anywhere between 3 days and 2 weeks and is at its worst when you are sleeping forcing you to wake through the night for trips to the Doulton.

would be nice if you lost some weight as a result but nope you don't.

I've researched it and it seems that it's a very common ailment that nobody really knows the reason why, plenty of theories which just means people don't have a clue, the only thing that we've found that fixes it is drinking Coke, that shit kills everything!

So, of course I woke up this morning with my latest bout of this bug.

So I thought for certain that I had to draw a 'stomach' bug today.

Got me thinking about bugs themselves, they have stomachs right? do they get stomach bugs? or maybe stomach amoeba? or something smaller than them.

I wonder what Bugs call 'bugs'?

no, I'm not on drugs! (I wish there was a drug for it, drank some apple cider vinegar earlier, uughhh!)

Day #161 - Squirrels!!

Squirrels,squirrels every where
I can't help but stop and stare :)
